The Allen-Bradley ControlLogix system differs from other logic control systems in that the ControlLogix system is capable of integrating an entire manufacturing environment, not just certain machines or lines within a factory. A simple ControlLogix system consists of a stand alone controller and input/output modules in a single chassis. More complex systems can have more than one controller in a chassis or multiple controllers and input/output modules in several chassis. These chassis can be part of an extended network interconnected with various communication modules and spread throughout an entire manufacturing facility. ControlLogix provides the total system, including discrete and analog input/output, control over drives, motion, processes, and even safety concerns. The ControlLogix system can be configured in standard formats, for harsh environments, and even with integrated safety features. It is a totally modular system that can be configured to meet the demands and concerns of any manufacturing facility. Designing the initial system, building it, and even modifying it at some future date can be done very cost-effectively, both in terms of initial equipment expense as well as significant savings realized in engineering the system and training those who will use it.
The entire ControlLogix system is a blend of several different modular components which are mounted in the system cabinet. Among these components are:
ControlLogix Controllers
ControlLogix Communication Modules
ControlLogix Integrated Motion
ControlLogix I/O Modules
ControlLogix Power Supplies

Configuring your ControlLogix system, whether it be for one machine, an assembly line, or an entire manufacturing facility, is rather straightforward. You will need to closely examine the relevant manufacturing blueprints, as well as all machine prints and electrical prints pertinent to the task at hand. Create a spreadsheet listing all operations requiring input and output points. Also note all specialty applications, such as motion control and temperature control, and the type of communications modules needed to interface with the various system components. After completing this spreadsheet you will be able to determine the amount of memory necessary, the number of input/output modules and communication modules needed, and all other aspects of your ControlLogix system. The following tables list the various options available to complete your ControlLogix system. The order in which they are presented is the most logical way to configure your system. For instance, you cannot determine which ControlLogix Controller(s) to select until you have analyzed the number of Input/Output modules needed.
Allen Bradley ControlLogix Controllers
Several options are available, including standard controllers, GuardLogix safety controllers, and ControlLogix-XT extreme temperature controllers. User memory options range from 2 MB to 32 MB.
You will need to select the appropriate controller with sufficient memory to operate your system. If there is any doubt, always select the next larger memory option. You'll also be choosing optional memory cards as needed. Controllers can be placed in any slot of a ControlLogix chassis, and multiple controllers can be mounted in the same chassis. Multiple controllers communicate with each other but can operate independently. Refer to the following tables for specifications. Controller USB ports are intended for temporary local programming. USB ports are not suited for permanent connections or hazardous locations.

Redundant ControlLogix Controllers
All ControlLogix controllers support controller redundancy. A redundant controller system requires two 1756 Chassis per redundant system with these identical features:
- Total number of slots
- Modules in same slots in each chassis
- Redundancy firmware in each chassis
- Two additional ControlNet Nodes outside the redundant chassis pair
- One 1756-RM Redundancy Module per chassis to support one 1756-L64 or L65 controller or one 1756-RM to support two 1756-L71, L72, L73, L74, L75, L61, L62 or L63 controllers
- Maximum seven communication modules. Choose from 1756-CN2/B, CN2R/B, EN2T, or EN2F Modules
- One 1756-RMCx cable
Allen Bradley ControlLogix Communication Modules
Available options include EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Data Highway Plus, Remote I/O, Foundation Fieldbus, Serial, DH-485, and SynchLink. Multiple communication modules can be installed in the ControlLogix system to allow control and/or sharing of data over different networks.
After determining the networks you will be using you will be able to select the communication modules your system will require and the necessary cables and network equipment. Remember to plan for extra modules and cables if you are designing a redundant system. It is possible to route a message through up to 4 different chassis (8 communication hops). A ControlLogix controller is not required in each chassis to accomplish this. The following tables list the various communication modules available to interface with your system. The first table lists normal usage applications for the industry protocol communications networks.

Allen Bradley ControlLogix I/O Modules
Choose from digital, analog, RTD, motion, thermocouple, and specialty modules. Further options include field-side diagnostics, individually isolated inputs and/or outputs, and electronic fusing. Each module requires a remote terminal block (RTB).
Your selection process will include not only the I/O requirements of the system but also the characteristics of the modules. Input/Output modules can cover many applications, from high speed digital to process control. By the use of a “producer/consumer” model, the ControlLogix system can share input information and output status with many controllers over the entire system. Some modules feature field-side diagnostics, electronic fusing, and/or individually isolated inputs or outputs. You will need to select a remote terminal block (RTB) or a 1492 interface module (IFM) to connect all field wiring for each module. The following tables list the various input/output module options available.

DC Digital Input and Output Modules
Allen-Bradley delineates between the various digital DC modules by sorting them into two categories: Sinking and Sourcing. As an engineer designing your own system it will help you to understand the difference between these two options. Here is the definition as given by Allen-Bradley:
"Sinking and Sourcing are terms used to describe a current signal flow relationship between field input and output devices in a control system and their power supply.
- Field devices connected to the positive side (+V) of the field power supply are sourcing field devices.
- Field devices connected to the negative side (DC Common) of the field power supply are called sinking field devices.
To maintain electrical compatibility between field devices and the programmable controller system, this definition is extended to the input/output circuits on the digital I/O modules.
- Sourcing I/O circuits supply (source) current to the sinking field devices.
- Sinking I/O circuits receive (sink) current from sourcing field devices.
Europe: DC sinking input and sourcing output module circuits are the commonly used options"

Input/Output Module Accessories
There are two methods of providing wiring connections between the 1756 Input/Output Modules and your plant wiring system: Removable Terminal Blocks (RTBs) and prefabricated wiring cable systems that attach directly to the module. Descriptions of both options are listed below. Note that if you select the RTB option and are using 14 gauge or heavier wire you will need to select an extended depth RTB housing (1756-TBE) for each RTB used.
Removable Terminal Blocks (RTBs)
RTB Part Number | 1756-TBNH | 1756-TBSH | 1756-TBCH | 1756-TBS6H
Description | 20 Position NEMA Screw Clamp RTB | 20 Pin Spring Clamp RTB/Standard Housing | 36 Pin Cage Clamp RTB/Standard Housing | 36 Pin Spring Clamp RTB/Standard Housing

Wiring Cable Systems
Instead of using RTBs and connecting the module wiring on-site you can elect the following wiring system options:
- Interface Modules (IFMs) provide output terminal blocks for digital input/output modules. You select pre-wired cables matching the digital I/O module to the IFM.
- Analog Interface Modules (AIFMs) provide output terminal blocks for analog I/O modules. You select pre-wired cables matching the analog I/O module to the AIFM.
- I/O Module Ready Cables are a prefabricated wiring assembly in which one end is an RTB that plugs directly into the input/output module. The other end of the assembly has color-coded conductors that connect directly to an industry standard terminal block.
Allen Bradley ControlLogix Power Supplies
Available to provide 1.2V, 3.3 V, 5 V, and 24 V DC power. Requires one power supply per chassis for standard systems, or a power supply bundle can be selected for redundant systems.
Your options include one power supply for each chassis in a standard system or a power supply bundle in a redundant system.
